People who are not full-blown narcissists might still be selfish enough to put a relationship in jeopardy. If one person perpetually puts him or herself ahead of his or her partner, this can eventually destroy the marriage.

However, couples might be able to work through their conflict regarding issues such as property division and child custody by using mediation. They may be more satisfied with the settlement they reach in this way instead of going through litigation. In a community property state like California, most of the property acquired after the marriage is considered shared property, and couples own it equally. However, if they negotiate, they do not have to split everything 50/50. They may be able to reach other arrangements that suit them better.
